type='text'>Cemetery Project Meeting July 27, 2011

We had a great meeting tonight in the courthouse with no electricity! Liz, Jerry, Joyce, Phyllis, Bruce and I talked about various cemetery subjects.

Benton Township records have been scanned and there is a new cemetery reading for Benton Township (sometimes referred to as Potterville) cemetery and Pinch cemetery with the township records associated with the names on the index. Photographs are completed for the Benton township cemetery.

I was going to demonstrate the Benton Township cemetery reading and another Woodlawn index with associated death record images, but with no electricity, I could not run the computer.

I had several symbols that I was not sure what they were on a flash drive. Liz had her laptop there and had enough battery power to show these. We didn't figure out what they all were, but did decide what a few of them were.

Bruce gave me an updated listing for Freemire and I will compare and update our list in the future. Bruce plans to work on Sunfield cemetery next.

Jerry gave me some cemetery symbols for Brickyard and an Information page for the web.

Phyllis gave me the type='text'>Cemetery Project List

Following is the list of Eaton County cemeteries, and the status of each one for various projects. The 1st two columns are the cemetery name and the township or city they are in. The Photos column shows 1 of 3 activities: If there is a year in the column, photos were taken in that year. If there is a name in the column, that person is either working on photos or intends to work on them. If there is nothing, no active work is being done for that cemetery.

The Symbol Pictures column shows whether we have at least a few pictures from the cemetery for our Cemetery Symbols Project. We will want to have some photos from every cemetery before publishing the DVD of the project.

The Entrance column shows whether we have a photo of the entrance and/or sign for the cemetery. This is also part of the Cemetery Symbols Project.

The Info Page column shows whether we have an updated Information page for the cemetery on our Cemeteries website page. Jerry & Vicki have done an outstanding job of going to many of the cemeteries and creating the information pages, including panoramic photos.

If anyone is interested in possibly working on a cemetery, please contact the Eaton County Genealogical Society (see website) and let us know! We would love to give more information about the project! Absolutely NO OBLIGATION!! There are no deadlines to meet and no pressure at all! We are a friendly group of folks who enjoy preserving genealogical information for researchers and it's a great way to make new friends! We are happy to work with new people.

If you notice that I have wrong information in this chart, please e-mail me and let me know! I'll be happy to correct it!

Cemetery Project Meeting May 25 2011

We had a great meeting tonight! Thanks to Marcy, Jerry & Vicki, Joyce and Phyllis for looking at headstone photos with me to help decide what is on them! One of our bigger topics of discussion tonight was the use of flour (yes... baking flour) on headstones to enhance the names, dates and other information. It is especially useful on granite headstones, but is helpful on most. Following is an example of a headstone where we could not see the information very good because it blended in with the granite, then we put flour on it. (I should have taken a 'before' picture!)

The June cemetery project meeting is being canceled. I will send out an e-mail reminding people that it has been canceled. Hope to see you back the last Wednesday in July!

The Eaton Rapids Historical Society hosted a tour of Rosehill cemetery a week or so ago. Phyllis will see if there is any information we can get a copy of about notable people in the cemetery.

I have (yet another) list of cemeteries and the status of the photos for the entire cemetery and for the symbol project, and for the website information pages. I will get this updated and post it.
<img width='1' height='1' (thanks!). Those of us who did attend exchanged information. I have a handout of headstone cleaning information from the Michigan Historic Cemeteries Preservation Guide. If you would like me to send you this, let me know. We did not discuss it this time and I will bring it next month also. I added headstone photos to our Symbols project and made some DVDs to give to whoever would like a copy. I have not updated the Adobe site yet, and will let you know when I get them updated. I have about 50 photos that I would like help with identifying what the symbols might mean, and these are on the DVDs. I may send some out as e-mails in the next couple of weeks. I received more Woodlawn photos (thanks Readings have been done by many people over the years and each cemetery reading contains different information. The vast majority of them include the name, date of birth and date of death. Many include some special information such as what is printed on the headstone. Some include even more information, such as spouse and parents.

This database can be searched by cemetery, then listed by several different sort orders such as name, Section-Lot, etc. And, it can be searched by name. The most up-to-date information type='text'>Cemetery Project Meeting March 9, 2011

We had a great meeting tonight and thanks to you folks who attended!

We received Freemire photos and index! We received an updated Oakwood Oneida index along with entrance/sign photos for Oakwood, Pioneer and Union cemeteries! We also received cemetery Information pages for our website for these 3 cemeteries and there are some very good panoramic photos included (thanks Vicki & Jerry!). Check out our cemeteries page at www.miegs.org/Cemeteries.shtm , then click on the 'Information' links for these cemeteries.

We have volunteers to help get photos from several of the cemeteries for our cemetery symbol project. Thanks Bruce & Carol and Jerry & Vicki!!! Phyllis brought in some more photos to include. Thanks Phyllis for all the work you have put into this project!

Al & Tina demonstrated the project they are working on for Woodlawn cemetery and it was very interesting for all of us! It shows the cemetery in 3D, like you are walking through it yourself. They have some exciting features they plan to put on their website for Woodlawn cemetery, which is now under construction. I am really looking forward to this website and will provide a link to it when it becomes available. In the meantime, there is a Facebook page for Woodlawn. When I find out how to link their page here, I will add the link. Al brought in burial transfer records for people to see. He has organized, scanned and indexed these. Thanks Al & Tina for sharing!

We talked about the photo symbol project. I broke the project into many smaller tasks and later on, possibly some people may agree to help with tasks such as descriptions and proofreading. I gave everyone a copy of this in case they may want to help later on. (While help would be appreciated if you have the time, there is absolutely no expectations that you need to help!) I have set up an Acrobat.com shared workspace where I have uploaded the cemetery project documents and I demonstrated how this works to several people. Thanks Sue for helping me show them how it works! There are now more people who can see how the project is shaping up and can make changes if they wish. There may be some of the Cemetery Project members who aren't actually working on the project, but who may like to see how it's coming along. If so, set up an Acrobat.com account, let me know and I will send you an invitation to the workspace.

We talked a little bit about the guidelines, but did not go through them in detail. Joyce asked how to document cemetery plots that are wider than what you can write across a page. Phyllis has used multiple pages to plot a cemetery, then taped them together. I would love to try the cad program!! I hope I can in the future.

We will talk about cleaning headstones again in April. There is information about this in the historic preservation guide that I will copy and bring. And, we can talk about guidelines again. We talked about something that I thought would be good to discuss some more and I did not write it down and now cannot remember... darn! If any of you remember, please comment on this post. It had something to do with the reading of a cemetery.

I know we talked about more so please update this with what I have forotten!

Eaton County Genealogical Society Website

I am interested in hearing opinions about our website. What do you find most helpful? What do you find least helpful? Are you having problems navigating within the website? What else would you like to see? I would like to hear about problems, comments and suggestions. If you would like to respond to this and prefer not to comment on this blog, you may e-mail me at database@meigs.org. Thanks!

The Cemetery Project Blog is now merged with this blog

The Eaton County Cemetery Project blog has been merged with this blog. I will post to this blog and eventually delete the Cemetery Project blog. We will plan on starting meetings back up in April 2011. I think the last Wednesday of the month has worked nicely for us so unless there is a conflict next year with the room, I will put us on the calendar for that night.

Julie, from Courthouse Square, happened to stop by during our meeting and we talked about the Maple Hill Cemetery Tour they had, where they had High School kids play the parts of people during the year. They are going to do that again next year (for Maple Hill) with a Civil War theme. We talked about how something like this might be an idea for the Woodlawn cemetery (Vermontville), especially if Al & Tina complete their project of documenting the burials there next year. Just something for us to think about for next year.

Jerry brought in lots of good stuff! He has done some really nice panoramic photos of Pioneer Cemetery and Union/Partlow/Johnson Cemetery and he will end up with Information files for our website Cemetery page. He delivered the Oakwood Oneida cemetery photos on dvds. He is still working on details of the index reading. He brought photos for the Symbols project too.

We discussed taking photos, such as the best time of day most times seems to be the early afternoon (although some of us go whenever we can and just have to make the best of it) and how we sometimes take multiple photos of large monument type stones; one that shows the whole stone and/or maybe even a whole set of family stones, and another that shows a closeup of the information.

We talked about the items of information we want to see in an index. We always want to see the name, date of birth (if available from stone), date of death (usually on the stone) and whatever information is included on the stone along with any types of flags that may be there, such as veteran flags. This makes a good reading! If there is information on a Lot and/or Section number, this would be great to include. I like to keep track of the names that have a photo. With some cemeteries, we have kept track of the headstones by row, and by headstone within the row. Some folks like to do further research, or perhaps know from their own family history, and they can use another column to note this information and cite the source, such as parents, maiden name, etc. Everyone decides how much they can do and whatever is included with an index when it is delivered to me will be printed as is.

If possible, I like to include records from a previous reading on a new reading where we did not find a headstone to photograph. A stone may have been readable in a prior reading, where it is not now. I note in my Information column that the record is from a prior record.

Sue & I spent the day today at Eaton Rapids City Hall and took photos of the burial record books for Rosehill and some death record books for the early 1900s.

Al, from Woodlawn, reported that he received boxes of old records from the Sexton with some records over a hundred years old! There are meeting minutes that can tell a story (for example) of burials (and/or stones?) that were moved from Vermontville Pioneer cemetery to Woodlawn. There is the original paperwork of the steps they took to purchase the land for the cemetery and who the original shareholders were. There are old burial transfer records. What a find!!!! Al is working on scanning all of the information and will be sharing it with the Vermontville library and with us.

At our regular member meeting last week, Bob Strobel shared some photos of a new sign he had made for Skinner Cemetery. I've put these on our website at:

http://www.miegs.org/CemeteryInfo/SkinnerInfo.pdf.
If anyone knows any history about this cemetery, please let us know!

I gave everyone a copy of the Cemetery Project Guidelines that we had come up with in 2007. I asked them to take them home and jot any notes they might have about guidelines and when we next meet in April, we will start off by going thru these and seeing if we would like to make any changes. Perhaps we can think of some things to work on next year and/or come up with some types of goals we may want to try and meet. I would welcome some ideas from people about what you would like to discuss at our meetings. I feel like even if I don't have much of an agenda, we always have such a nice meeting and come away learning something, no matter how small of a detail.

I have probably forgotten something from our meeting... let me know if you remember something I don't have here. (Thanks!)

Even though we will not be meeting in the next few months, everyone is free to contact me with any questions or comments!

Cemetery Symbols & Flags Project

Phyllis and I (and Sue too!) have a good start on this project. We think we want it to be examples (with meanings when applicable) of Eaton County cemetery headstones and/or symbols and/or flag stands. It would be nice to have something from every Eaton County cemetery.

The project is being documented in a Word table with a category, a photo, and the cemetery, name of who it belongs to if we know, and possibly the meaning. See the end of the post for an example.

We could use some help from anyone who is interested. If you have a photo now of a symbol or flag or unique headstone, let me know. For example, we have a Boy Scout emblem, but not a Girl Scout emblem. We are still going through the photos we have for cemeteries and when we get done with what we have, I will make a list of the things we do not have a sample of yet. We could use help with proofing the document. From a dvd, if you are interested in reading the document and making sure what it says makes sense and/or adding some of your knowledge or research to the document, let me know! You just need a dvd reader and Word 2003 or later. The Word document hyperlinks the photo so you can click for access to the photo from your photo software.

Here is an example:
Category Because the last Wednesday in November is the night before Thanksgiving we will have our meeting on the 3rd Wednesday instead which is November 17 at 7:00 at the old courthouse. We will plan on resuming Cemetery Project meetings in April.

(Note: The regular Eaton County Genealogical Society meeting for November is always held on the 2nd Wednesday rather than the 3rd Wednesday due to Thanksgiving. Meetings are not held again until March.)

We welcomed 3 new people to our meeting tonight. Thanks for joining us Bruce, Tina and Al!

I gave out an updated copy of the Cemetery Project chart and explained what the columns mean.

Several of us have an interest in creating a notebook of cemetery stone symbols and their meanings. Krys says she has started this and will share with us what she has done. So... we have a start! Phyllis and I will meet next Tuesday (October 2nd about 10:30) at the ECGS room and work on this project. If anyone would like to join us, please feel welcome! If you would like to help with this, please let me know. We would love all the help we can get.

Bruce and his wife Carol are reading Freemire cemetery. This is their first cemetery reading and they are off to a great start.

Al and Tina are working on the Woodlawn cemetery in Vermontville. Al has been working with the sexton for several years now, and Tina is documenting the burials of the cemetery. She is using the original burial books to transcribe the information into a file and using one of the forms from the Cemetery Preservation Guide to document each individual with stone photo and other information. It is an exciting project they have taken on and looks very impressive!

They have a Facebook Page for Woodlawn if you use Facebook. Look up "Woodlawn Cemetery" and choose the page that has the photo similar to this.
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; She gave a small demo of how to use this which looks very fun to try.

A very big thanks to Tina and Al for sharing your Woodlawn project with us.

September 29, 2010 Meeting

Another great meeting tonight! Update of cemetery work:
Gresham (Diana): About 10% photos taken and renamed.
Kalamo (Joyce): Still working away on it.
Hamlin Oakwood (Phyllis): Photos are completed. Sherry has index typed. Gary is doing some research on a few of the names before completing the cemetery.
Rosehill (Phyllis): Several blocks are completed and index has been started. Phyllis says this cemetery is 90 acres!
Oakwood Oneida (Jerry & Vicki): Photos are completed and working on verifying and other data. We have a copy of city database records for this cemetery.
West Windsor (Sue, Gary & Sherry): Photos are completed and 60% renamed. Index is typed. In process of being verified.
Bosworth: (Gary & Sherry) Section 1 has had photos taken and index typed.
Vermontville: (Gary & Sherry) One more trip to clean stones and take photos. This cemetery is full of piles of broken stones, so we will end up with a small percentage of identified stones.
Hillside and Delta: (Jerry & Vicki & Randy) They will plan to work these cemeteries.

Grand Ledge Library vital statistic index cards: Jerry worked with the library and they have agreed that we can scan their cards and use in our Index System. He will use some of this information for his Oakwood reading. Jerry, Vicki and Sherry (& probably Gary too) plan on starting this scanning next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Proofreading: We had a small discussion on proofing our cemetery readings. Phyllis said she likes to proof and while she has never used the computer to proof (using photo software and Excel), she is willing to try it. (Thanks Phyllis!)

What happens to our work?
Our work ends up consisting of an Excel index file of the cemetery reading, the photographs and possibly some history about the cemetery. There is a master file that has everything the person doing the reading has included in their information. This can be different for each person. As a rule, we have the name, date of birth, date of death and an information column (such as husband of, age, military info, etc.) column at the minimum. Some people include some of their own research data as well. Some of these include the family stones. Many indexes identify where the stones/burials are within the cemetery. This master file is saved in multiple formats for various places.
The name & cemetery is loaded into the Index System, where the master file can then be accessed from a name. (This is available in the ECGS room only.)
Our website (www.miegs.org) shows a list of the names by cemetery from the Cemetery page. Some of the lists may give the lot number. The Cemetery page shows if a cemetery has photos. Some of the cemetery lists have a 'photo' list and shows if a specific person has a stone photo. (Not all of them show individually by name if they have a photo.. only if the cemetery has photos.)
Our website also has a Database page that shows the cemetery category by name. This tells you which cemetery and/or township record the name is included in.
The actual photos will be stored on DVDs (another option would be to purchase an external drive to store these on) by cemetery, then by name.
It is a goal to create a Cemetery Database very similar to the Index System, where the name can be searched and all data will be displayed on screens. There is no date in mind for this yet.
There will be a printed master list in the Cemetery books in Room 1 of ECGS.
The Publication Committee will be notified of the updates for possible new publications.

If anyone has any ideas/suggestions/comments for us, please let us know!!

Gresham Cemetery reading/photos

Diana, Krys and I have started work on Gresham cemetery!

We have made a standing work time of Tuesdays at 6:30 pm, beginning next week. Liz is in Colorado. Jerry could not make it and reports progress. The Grand Ledge library has a card file with index cards full of vital information for people. This could help him with details for his Oakwood (Oneida) reading. I would like to check with the library to see if they would allow us to scan the index cards, then that would provide possibly valuable information for the cemetery reading, and also many other names. Jerry has taken some photos of Pioneer and Union (views of the cemeteries) and will do some research to find information such as first burial for our website cemetery information page. Paula e-mailed map files of the Riverside cemetery and I forwarded these to Cyd, who is working on Riverside. Cyd could not make it and she may want to do the reading first, then complete the photos later. I think this is fine and I asked the group at the meeting their thoughts and they think it would be good to get the reading done too.

Phyllis has taken another 1300 photos and is now ready for the 'New' part. Phyllis asked me to show her how to rename the photos and we are meeting today at 10:00 at ECGS. She is getting toward the end of this cemetery.

Krys reported that she plans on doing Needmore. Diana and Krys have paired up to work on Gresham and I will go when I can. We have our first session on Monday evening. Sue would like to join when she can too. We will try using this blog to report work sessions and whoever can join can show up.

We discussed cleaning headstones and some of the tools we use were shown and discussed. Great discussion!

Thanks for coming to the meeting! Next meeting is the last Wed in September, September 29th at 7:00 at ECGS. Sherry

July 28, 2010 Meeting notes

We need to think about where we will store all of our photos.
